$14.25

Description

Origin & Traditional Use

A hanging censer, or thurible, is a vessel on a chain used to swing burning incense through a space. Thuribles are used in Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican services.

Uses in the Work

Swing it around the circle to cense the boundary before ritual, carry it to each quarter while calling the demons, and use it to fill the temple with offering smoke. It is especially powerful in group ritual and processions. Cense the altar, statue and participants before a rite, and use it outdoors where smoke disperses quickly.

The Botafumeiro of Santiago de Compostela cathedral weighs over 50 kilograms and is swung by eight men across the nave. Censing with a thurible was taken over by the Church from the temple rites of the ancient world.
