Description
Origin & Traditional Use
A scrying mirror of polished black obsidian, volcanic glass. Black mirrors have been used for divination since the Aztecs, and in European magic to see spirits, the future and the dead.
Uses in the Work
Gaze into the mirror in a dark room lit by a single candle placed behind or beside you, so its light does not reflect. Soften your eyes and let the surface cloud and clear. In demon work, call the spirit with its Enn and sigil and ask it to appear in the mirror, then ask questions and record what you see. Black mirrors are also used to contact the dead and to view past lives. Cover the mirror with black cloth when not in use. The larger 8-inch surface makes it easier to hold the gaze and to see full figures.

Lore
Aztec priests used obsidian mirrors to see the will of the gods, and Tezcatlipoca was depicted with an obsidian mirror in place of a foot. Nostradamus was said to scry in a bowl of water by night, a practice closely related to mirror gazing.
