Description

Origin & Traditional Use

Plain household candles were the everyday light of homes before electricity, and rootworkers and cunning folk have always used them for spells, choosing the colour to suit the work. They are unscented and undyed through, so nothing interferes with the dressing and intention you give them.

Uses in the Work

A plain household candle, the workhorse of rootwork and ceremonial practice, for any working in its color. Black belongs to Saturn and the night: banishing, binding, protection, adversarial and shadow work, and the darkness from which light emerges. Burn it on a Saturday, in the hour of Saturn. Carve, dress and burn it. These are perfect for altar lights, quarter candles, multi-day workings and practice. Keep a supply in every planetary color.

Lore

Black candles absorb and draw in, which is why they are burned for protection, banishing, uncrossing, binding and work with the dead. In the Hellenic world black animals were sacrificed to the gods of the underworld, and black is the colour of Saturn and the night.
