Description

Origin & Traditional Use

A seven-day jar candle, or vigil candle, is a tall candle poured into a glass jar and burned continuously or in sessions over about a week. It comes from Catholic vigil devotion and is the workhorse candle of Southern conjure and Latin American botanicas. In candle magic a black candle is burned for protection, banishing, binding and work with the dead.

Uses in the Work

A seven-day vigil flame in a single planetary color, burned continuously to hold one working steady for a full week. Black belongs to Saturn and the night: banishing, binding, protection, adversarial and shadow work, and the darkness from which light emerges. Burn it on a Saturday, in the hour of Saturn. Write your petition three times, cross it with your name, and lay it under the jar. Drill three small holes in the wax with a nail, fill them with a matching oil, and sprinkle a few herbs on top. Read the glass when it is spent: clear glass means the work went through, and black soot means resistance was met and burned off.

Pairs Well With

Conjure Oil – 1 oz; Heavy Parchment Paper – 5 Pack; Black Salt – 1 oz

Lore

The seven-day vigil comes from the votive lights of Catholic folk devotion. Rootworkers adopted it, and reading the soot and flame on the spent glass is its own form of divination.
