Description
Origin & Traditional Use
A seven-day jar candle, or vigil candle, is a tall candle poured into a glass jar and burned continuously or in sessions over about a week. It comes from Catholic vigil devotion and is the workhorse candle of Southern conjure and Latin American botanicas. In candle magic an orange candle is burned for opportunity, success and attraction.
Uses in the Work
A seven-day vigil flame in a single planetary color, burned continuously to hold one working steady for a full week. Orange belongs to Mercury and the Sun: attraction, open roads, opportunity and quick success. Burn it on a Wednesday. Write your petition three times, cross it with your name, and lay it under the jar. Drill three small holes in the wax with a nail, fill them with a matching oil, and sprinkle a few herbs on top. Read the glass when it is spent: clear glass means the work went through, and black soot means resistance was met and burned off.

Lore
The seven-day vigil comes from the votive lights of Catholic folk devotion. Rootworkers adopted it, and reading the soot and flame on the spent glass is its own form of divination.
