Description
Origin & Traditional Use
A figure candle is a candle moulded in the shape of a person, animal or symbol, so that the candle itself stands for what the working is about. Figure candles grew from the ancient practice of the wax image, in which what is done to the image is done to the one it represents. Male and female figure candles represent a specific person, and are named, carved and dressed to work on them for love, healing, domination, protection or cursing, depending on the colour. In candle magic a white candle is burned for purity, blessing and spirit contact, and it can stand in for any colour.
Uses in the Work
A female figure candle used to represent a specific woman, or the divine feminine, in sympathetic magic: to draw, bind, heal, influence or hex. White serves every purpose. It stands for illumination, consecration, purification and the Morning Star aspect, and it can substitute for any other color in a pinch. Burn it on a Monday or Sunday. Carve her name and birthdate into the wax and anoint the figure with the oil suited to the working. For a stronger link, place a photo or personal concern (hair, a signature) beneath the candle.

Lore
Personal concerns are the ‘taglock’ of witchcraft: hair, nails, handwriting or a worn cloth. They create the link that carries the spell to its target.
