Description
Origin & Traditional Use
A votive is a small candle, about two inches tall, made to burn for around ten to fifteen hours in a holder. The word comes from the Latin votum, a vow, because votives were lit before saints and gods to carry a prayer. Black cat candles are burned for luck, especially in gambling, and to reverse curses and bad luck, drawing on the black cat’s double reputation as both unlucky and magically powerful.
Uses in the Work
The cat figure, ancient companion of witches, burned for luck, protection, glamour and work with familiar spirits. Black belongs to Saturn and the night: banishing, binding, protection, adversarial and shadow work, and the darkness from which light emerges. Burn it on a Saturday, in the hour of Saturn. Dress it with Black Cat oil for luck and reversal, or with attraction oil for glamour. Burn it near the door to watch over the home, or on a familiar altar.
