Description
Origin & Traditional Use
An herbal votive is a small candle, about two inches tall, blended with herbs and oils chosen for its intention and made to burn for around ten to fifteen hours in a holder. The word votive comes from the Latin votum, a vow, because votives were lit before saints and gods to carry a prayer. Cleansing and releasing candles are burned to clear away negative energy, unwanted influences and old attachments, making space for what comes next.
Uses in the Work
For cleansing and release: to sweep away residue, stagnation and lingering spirits, and to purify the temple before and after the work. Light it, then sweep or smoke the space from the back of the house toward the front door. Open the door to let it all out and close it firmly behind. White serves every purpose. It stands for illumination, consecration, purification and the Morning Star aspect, and it can substitute for any other color in a pinch. Burn it on a Monday or Sunday.

Lore
Sweeping out evil with a broom is among the oldest household magics. Brooms were laid across thresholds to keep witches, or spirits, from crossing.
