Origin & Traditional Use

An herbal votive is a small candle, about two inches tall, blended with herbs and oils chosen for its intention and made to burn for around ten to fifteen hours in a holder. The word votive comes from the Latin votum, a vow, because votives were lit before saints and gods to carry a prayer. Dream and astral candles are burned before sleep or meditation to encourage vivid and prophetic dreams, lucid dreaming and journeys of the spirit.

Uses in the Work

For lucid dreaming, astral travel and night journeys, burned before sleep to open the gates of dream. Burn it for twenty minutes before bed with mugwort incense. Speak your intention three times, then snuff it and sleep with your journal and pen beside you.
