Description
Origin & Traditional Use
Hyssop is a bushy, aromatic herb of the mint family with blue flowers, used to flavour liqueurs such as Chartreuse and in cooking. It is the purifying herb of the Bible, and in folk magic it is the classic herb of spiritual cleansing.
Uses in the Work
Use it for deep purification and to wash away sin, guilt and spiritual filth. Add it to a ritual bath before initiation, dedication or pact work, and steep it in water to wash the altar and tools. In hoodoo it is the herb of cleansing after wrongdoing. In left-hand path practice it can be used to cleanse the residue of the old religion before a self-dedication, in the very terms of the old faith.

Lore
“Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean,” says Psalm 51. Hyssop was used to daub the blood of the Passover lamb on Israelite doorposts, and a hyssop branch raised the vinegar sponge to Christ on the cross. It became the sprinkler for holy water in Catholic rites.
