Description
Origin & Traditional Use
Juniper berries are the blue, resinous cones of the juniper shrub, used to flavour gin, sauerkraut and game dishes. Juniper smoke has long been burned to cleanse homes in Scotland, Scandinavia and the Himalayas.
Uses in the Work
Use them for protection, purification and the dead. Burn juniper to cleanse a space before and after spirit work, and hang it at the door against evil and theft. Add berries to protection jars and to necromantic incense, and string them as a protective necklace. Juniper smoke is used to strengthen psychic sight.
Pairs Well With
Frankincense Tears – 1 oz; White Sage – 1 oz; Three Kings Charcoal – 10 Tablets
Lore
Juniper smoke was burned in Scottish homes at New Year and in Tibetan temples. In the Bible Elijah sheltered under a juniper tree, and in the Grimm tale “The Juniper Tree” a murdered boy is reborn from beneath one. Gin takes its name from the Dutch jenever, juniper.
