Working with Demons

Vervain – 1 oz

$3.25

Description

Origin & Traditional Use

Vervain is a slender wild plant with small lilac flowers, long gathered in Europe as a household and folk herb. It has been one of the most important herbs of European witchcraft, used in purification, love and protection since Roman times.

Uses in the Work

Use it as a master herb of witchcraft: burn it to consecrate tools and purify the temple, and add it to love, protection and divination work. Steep it in water to cleanse the altar, and hang it over the bed to keep away nightmares. It is said to be loved by the spirits, so it suits offerings to almost any power.

Pairs Well With

Holy Water – 4 oz; Bone Damascus Athame; Frankincense Tears – 1 oz

Lore

Vervain was the “herb of grace” and “enchanter’s plant”. Roman priests swept Jupiter’s altar with it, and it was carried by Roman ambassadors. Christian legend says it staunched the wounds of Christ, yet medieval witches were also said to use it, giving the rhyme “vervain and dill hinder witches from their will”.
