Description
Origin & Traditional Use
White sage is a silvery desert shrub of southern California and Mexico. Its leaves are bundled and burned as a cleansing smoke in many Indigenous traditions and, today, in modern spiritual practice to clear a space.
Uses in the Work
Burn bundles or loose leaf to clear a space before casting, after evocation, or when moving into a new home or temple. Smoke tools, crystals and the aura between workings with different spirits. In daemonolatry it is used to clear negativity rather than banish the spirits you work with, so state clearly what you are clearing as you burn it.

White sage grows wild only in southern California and northern Mexico. It is sacred to many Indigenous nations of the region, who have asked that it be harvested sustainably. Its Latin name, Salvia apiana, comes from the bees that swarm its flowers.
