Origin & Traditional Use

Black kyanite is a blade-shaped form of the mineral kyanite. It is used in crystal practice to cut energetic cords, cleanse the aura and ground, and it is said never to need cleansing itself.

Uses in the Work

Sweep the blade through the aura to cut cords and attachments, including those left by a spirit after an evocation, a past partner, or a magician working against you. Use it to cut the energetic ties to the old life during dedication rites, and lay it on the altar as a cleansing tool that never needs cleansing itself. Its fan shape makes it a natural “witch’s broom” for sweeping a space.

Lore

Kyanite is unusual in that it has different hardness along and across the crystal, so it can be scratched one way but not the other. Black kyanite often forms in fan shapes nicknamed “witch’s brooms”. The name comes from the Greek kyanos, “deep blue”, for its more common form.
