Description
Origin & Traditional Use
Carnelian is an orange-red chalcedony, a type of quartz, used for seals, signet rings and beads since ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. In crystal practice it is the stone of courage, motivation, creativity and sexual energy.
Uses in the Work
Use it for fire, courage, lust and the will to act. Charge it with Mars or the Sun and carry it into confrontations, legal battles and any situation that demands boldness. Set it at the south quarter to anchor the element of fire, and place it on the altar in workings of sexual magic and passion with demons such as Asmodeus, Lilith or Sitri. It is also a traditional stone of the dead, so it is fitting on a necromantic altar.

Lore
Egyptian funerary texts name carnelian in amulets placed on the mummy. The Tyet “knot of Isis” was to be made from red stone, carnelian or jasper, to protect the dead. Medieval lapidaries said it calmed anger and banished fear, and Napoleon reputedly wore a carnelian seal found in Egypt as a talisman.
