Description
Origin & Traditional Use
A crystal ball is a polished sphere used for scrying, gazing into it until images, symbols or visions appear. It is one of the oldest divination tools in Western magic, used by seers, cunning folk and ceremonial magicians alike.
Uses in the Work
Use it for scrying, divination and spirit work in low candlelight. Gaze through the sphere rather than at it until it mists, then note the images that form. Charge it under the full moon and dedicate it to a spirit of divination such as Astaroth, Vassago or Buer. Place a sigil beneath it so the sphere acts as the window through which that spirit appears. A clear sphere can also be set at the centre of a circle or grid to amplify and focus the energy of the working. The larger the sphere, the easier it is to hold the gaze.

Lore
Quartz spheres were treasured in the Roman world as frozen water from the heavens. Medieval and Renaissance magicians used “shew stones”, and the Ars Notoria and Dee’s practice show crystals being consecrated so that angels or spirits could appear within them. Clear crystal was believed to be incorruptible, a window no spirit could lie through.
