Description
Origin & Traditional Use
A crystal ball is a polished sphere used for scrying, divination by gazing into a reflective or transparent surface until images appear. Black spheres show a dark, depthless field rather than reflections, and are favoured for spirit and shadow work.
Uses in the Work
Black spheres are preferred for spirit communication and necromancy because they show a void rather than a reflection. Work in dim light with a single candle behind you, soften your gaze into the depth of the sphere and let the darkness cloud and part. Call a demon into the sphere with its Enn and sigil before you, then ask questions and record every image. Charge it at the dark moon and keep it covered in black cloth when not in use, so it isn’t exposed to stray light and energies.

Lore
Crystal gazing was the method of choice of John Dee’s scryer Edward Kelley, who used a polished stone to receive the Enochian language. The Victorians made the crystal ball a symbol of fortune-tellers, but the older tradition holds that dark stones open onto the realm of the dead and the spirits, and clear ones onto the world of light.
