Description
Origin & Traditional Use
A figure candle is a candle moulded in the shape of a person, animal or symbol, so that the candle itself stands for what the working is about. Figure candles grew from the ancient practice of the wax image, in which what is done to the image is done to the one it represents. Santa Muerte, Holy Death, is a Mexican folk saint, and her figure candles are burned for protection, justice, love and to ask her favour, with each colour serving a different purpose. In candle magic a black candle is burned for protection, banishing, binding and work with the dead.
Uses in the Work
Santa Muerte, the Most Holy Death, the bony lady who answers when other saints will not. She is petitioned for protection, justice, love and the settling of scores. Offer it with tequila, cigarette smoke, red roses and an apple. Speak plainly, as she favors directness. Thank her publicly when she delivers, and never make a promise to her that you will not keep. Black belongs to Saturn and the night: banishing, binding, protection, adversarial and shadow work, and the darkness from which light emerges. Burn it on a Saturday, in the hour of Saturn.
