Description
Origin & Traditional Use
A substantial bronze-finish statue of the Baphomet for the main temple altar. Baphomet is the winged, goat-headed androgyne drawn by the French occultist Éliphas Lévi in 1856, a symbol of the balance of opposites: male and female, light and dark, above and below. A statue of Baphomet is the classic altar centrepiece of Luciferian, Satanic and left-hand path temples.
Uses in the Work
Set it as the focal point of the altar, facing you, to anchor the current of the left-hand path and the union of opposites. Call to Baphomet as the guardian of the temple when opening rites, and place offerings, sigils and petitions at its feet. In Satanic and Luciferian ritual it presides over self-dedication, initiation and pact work. Anoint it with Baphomet oil on dedication, and light black and white candles on either side to honour the balance it represents. It also makes a powerful focus for meditation on the hermetic axiom “as above, so below”.

Lore
Lévi wrote “Solve” and “Coagula” on Baphomet’s arms, the alchemical command to dissolve and bind. Some scholars think “Baphomet” was a medieval French corruption of “Mahomet”. In 2015 an 8½-foot bronze Baphomet was unveiled by The Satanic Temple in Detroit.
