Description
Origin & Traditional Use
Basil is the aromatic leaf of the mint family at the heart of Italian, Thai and Mediterranean cooking, from pesto to curry. In folk magic across Europe, India and the Caribbean it has long been used for love, money and protection of the home.
Uses in the Work
Use it for money, love and protection. Sprinkle it across the threshold or in the cash register to draw custom, and add it to prosperity powders and floor washes. Burn it as an offering in workings with Belial and other demons of wealth, and place it under the pillow of a lover to keep fidelity. In some traditions it is also burned to call the dead.
Pairs Well With
Pyrite – 1 lb Tumbled; Cinnamon Powder – 1 oz; Sun Planetary Oil – 2 dram
Lore
Basil takes its name from the Greek basileus, “king”. It was linked with the basilisk, and old herbals warned that crushed basil left under a stone would breed scorpions. In Italy a pot of basil on the balcony signalled a woman ready to receive a lover, and in India holy basil, tulsi, is worshipped as a goddess.
