Description
Origin & Traditional Use
Black cohosh is a tall North American woodland plant, also called black snakeroot and bugbane, long used in Indigenous and settler folk herbalism. In folk magic the root is used for courage, love and protection.
Uses in the Work
Use it for courage, protection and strengthening love. Carry it in a mojo bag before confrontation, sprinkle it around the home to drive away evil, and add it to love and lust work. Its old name “black snakeroot” makes it a root of the earth and the underworld, fitting in chthonic and serpent workings with Leviathan or Apep.

Lore
Its name bugbane comes from its strong smell, which was used to drive away insects. Settlers called it “rattlesnake root” because it was believed to cure snakebite. It was sold in the famous Lydia Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound of the nineteenth century.
