Description
Origin & Traditional Use
An athame is a ritual knife, traditionally black-handled and double-edged, used in witchcraft and ceremonial magic to direct energy and command spirits. It is not used for cutting physical things.
Uses in the Work
Use it to cast the circle, pointing the blade at the ground as you turn, and to point to each quarter as you call the elemental demons. Direct energy into a candle, talisman or sigil by holding the blade toward it, and trace sigils in the air. It represents the masculine principle and is joined with the chalice in the symbolic Great Rite. Keep it consecrated, wrapped and used only for ritual.

Lore
The word athame comes from “arthame” in French editions of the Key of Solomon, which described a black-handled knife for ritual. Gerald Gardner made the athame the witch’s primary tool in the 1950s.
