Description
Origin & Traditional Use
Black obsidian is natural volcanic glass, knapped into razor-sharp blades and arrowheads since the Stone Age and polished into mirrors. In crystal practice it is a powerful stone of protection and truth.
Uses in the Work
Use it as the most powerful protective and reflective stone for demon work. Its mirror surface is the classic tool for scrying spirits and the dead. Place it at the edges of the circle to absorb hostile energies, and use it in shadow work to look honestly at what you hide from yourself. Cleanse it frequently, especially after evocation.

Lore
Obsidian is volcanic glass. Aztec priests polished it into mirrors for the god Tezcatlipoca, the “smoking mirror”, and John Dee’s famous scrying mirror, now in the British Museum, is Aztec obsidian. Stone Age people knapped it into blades sharper than modern steel surgical scalpels.
