Description
Origin & Traditional Use
A scrying mirror of polished black obsidian, volcanic glass. Black mirrors have been used for divination since the Aztecs, and in European magic to see spirits, the future and the dead.
Uses in the Work
Gaze into the mirror in a dark room lit by a single candle placed behind or beside you, so its light does not reflect. Soften your eyes and let the surface cloud and clear. In demon work, call the spirit with its Enn and sigil and ask it to appear in the mirror, then ask questions and record what you see. Black mirrors are also used to contact the dead and to view past lives. Cover the mirror with black cloth when not in use.

Lore
John Dee’s famous obsidian mirror, now in the British Museum, was an Aztec cult object linked to the god Tezcatlipoca, “Smoking Mirror”, and brought to Europe after the conquest of Mexico. Horace Walpole later owned it and labelled it as the stone into which Dr Dee used to call his spirits.
