Description

Origin & Traditional Use

Black onyx is a black chalcedony, a type of quartz, carved into cameos, seals and beads since antiquity. In crystal practice it is used for strength, self-control, discipline and protection.

Uses in the Work

Use it for protection, discipline and binding. Carry it to strengthen resolve during long workings and fasts, and place it in the four corners of the temple as a ward. It is used in banishing and binding work, and on the altar when working with Saturnian spirits of limitation and structure such as Saturn, Bael or Samael.

Pairs Well With

Black Tourmaline – 1 lb Tumbled; King Solomon Oil – 1 oz; Black Salt – 1 oz

Lore

Onyx takes its name from the Greek onyx, “fingernail”. Myth said Cupid trimmed Venus’s nails while she slept and the Fates turned the clippings to stone. Medieval lapidaries warned that onyx brought nightmares and quarrels, which is why it became the stone of bindings and severance.
