Origin & Traditional Use

Black tourmaline, or schorl, is the most common form of the tourmaline mineral. In crystal practice it is the leading stone of protection, used to block negative energy, psychic attack and electromagnetic “smog”.

Uses in the Work

Use it as the first line of defence against psychic attack, curses and hostile spirits. Place it at each door and window of the home and at the four quarters of the temple. Carry it when working with volatile entities or when you suspect someone is working against you, and set it in protection jars and grids.

Lore

Tourmaline’s name comes from the Sinhalese thoramalli, a term for mixed-coloured gems. When heated or rubbed it becomes electrically charged and pulls in ash and dust, and Dutch traders used it to clean their pipes. That power to draw things to itself is why it is trusted to soak up harmful energy.
