Description
Origin & Traditional Use
Elderberries are the dark purple fruit of the elder tree, cooked into syrups, jams, pies and elderberry wine. The elder is one of the most magical trees in European folklore, the home of the Elder Mother.
Uses in the Work
Use the berries in protection, banishing and work with the dead. Hang them over the door, add them to protection jars and burn them in exorcism incense. The elder belongs to the crone and the underworld, so use it in necromancy and offerings to Hecate. Ask permission of the Elder Mother before using elder in a working. It is said to give power over spirits who would harm you.
