Description
Origin & Traditional Use
This is a botanica-style tin candle, poured into a metal tin and dressed for a single intention. Candles like this are sold in Latin American botanicas for every saint, spirit and need, and burned on home altars as a prayer and a petition. Luck candles are burned for good fortune, especially in gambling, lotteries and games of chance, a tradition of Southern conjure and Latin American botanicas.
Uses in the Work
Gallina Negra, the Black Hen, is a candle of the old Spanish and Caribbean grimoire tradition, burned for wealth, hidden treasure and powerful protective sorcery. Burn it on a Tuesday or Friday night with a petition for the riches or protection you seek. Some keep a single black feather beside it as a token of the hen. Black belongs to Saturn and the night: banishing, binding, protection, adversarial and shadow work, and the darkness from which light emerges. Burn it on a Saturday, in the hour of Saturn.
