Description
Origin & Traditional Use
A votive is a small candle, about two inches tall, made to burn for around ten to fifteen hours in a holder. The word comes from the Latin votum, a vow, because votives were lit before saints and gods to carry a prayer. These candles honour the spirits of nature and the Horned God of the wild, and are burned in workings with the land, the forest and the old gods.
Uses in the Work
For the Horned God, lord of the wild, the hunt and the forest. He is the masculine power of nature, kin to Pan, Cernunnos and the Sabbatic Goat. Burn it in the woods or with oak, pine and cedar on the altar. Offer wine and invoke him for strength, virility and wild freedom. Green belongs to Venus and the earth: money, fertility, growth and the Venusian current of attraction. Burn it on a Friday.

Lore
The horned figure of the witches’ Sabbath and the Baphomet of Lévi descend from the same ancient image as the horned god Cernunnos.
