Description
Origin & Traditional Use
Hawthorn is a thorny hedgerow tree of Europe whose red berries, called haws, were made into jellies and wines. It flowers in May and is one of the most important trees in British and Irish folklore, said to be sacred to the fairies.
Uses in the Work
Use it for protection, fertility and work with the Fair Folk and other spirits of the land. Hang a sprig over the door against evil, and add the berries to protection sachets and witch bottles. Hawthorn guards the boundary between worlds, so use it in rituals of crossing over and journeying. In love magic it is used for marriage and fidelity, and it is a fitting offering for Beltane rites.

Lore
It was thought deeply unlucky to bring hawthorn blossom indoors, and in Ireland lone hawthorns were “fairy trees” that no farmer would cut. Christian legend says Joseph of Arimathea’s staff took root as the Glastonbury Thorn, and Christ’s crown of thorns was said to be hawthorn.
