Origin & Traditional Use
Hematite is an iron oxide with a metallic silver-grey polish. It is the main ore of iron and was ground into red ochre pigment, and in crystal practice it is the classic grounding and protective stone.
Uses in the Work
Use it to ground and stabilise after evocation, trance and astral travel, holding it until you feel fully back in the body. Its mirror surface is used in reflective protection magic to send hostile energy back to its source. It also carries Mars energy for courage and strength, and blood symbolism in pacts and blood offerings.

Lore
Hematite’s name comes from the Greek haima, “blood”, because it streaks red when cut or ground. Ancient warriors rubbed it on their bodies before battle to become invulnerable. Polished hematite was used for mirrors and ground into red ochre, one of the oldest pigments in human history.
