Description
Origin & Traditional Use
Binding oil is a traditional hoodoo condition oil used to tie up, restrain or hold a person, situation or spirit. Rootworkers use it to stop gossip, keep a lover faithful or bind an enemy from doing harm.
Uses in the Work
Dress a black candle with a petition naming the target, wrap a poppet or photo in black thread soaked in the oil, or anoint a jar spell to keep a situation still. In demon work, use it to bind a hostile spirit that will not leave, or to seal the terms of a pact so both sides are held to it. Work it during a waning moon.

Lore
Binding spells are some of the oldest written magic. Greek curse tablets, called katadesmoi, literally “bindings”, were scratched onto lead and dropped into wells and graves to tie up a rival’s tongue, legs or love.
