Description
Origin & Traditional Use
A seven-day jar candle, or vigil candle, is a tall candle poured into a glass jar and burned continuously or in sessions over about a week. It comes from Catholic vigil devotion and is the workhorse candle of Southern conjure and Latin American botanicas. Jinx and hex-breaking candles are burned in conjure to remove curses and crossed conditions and to end a run of bad luck.
Uses in the Work
Breaks jinxes, hexes and crossed conditions, and restores the free flow of luck and will after someone has worked against you. Burn it over a petition listing everything that has gone wrong. Surround it with a ring of salt and agrimony, and bathe in hyssop on the final day. Dispose of the remains away from your home.

Hyssop’s cleansing reputation comes from Psalm 51 (‘Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean’), which rootworkers still recite during uncrossing baths.
