Description
Origin & Traditional Use
A seven-day jar candle, or vigil candle, is a tall candle poured into a glass jar and burned continuously or in sessions over about a week. It comes from Catholic vigil devotion and is the workhorse candle of Southern conjure and Latin American botanicas. Reversing candles are burned in conjure to send a curse, hex or harmful work back to the person who sent it, so it returns to its source.
Uses in the Work
Light it for a week-long reversal: write the sender’s name (or ‘whoever has worked against me’), turn it upside down beneath the jar, and keep the flame burning. Read the glass afterward: clear glass means the work went through, and heavy soot means resistance was burned off.

Lore
Traditional reversible candles are red on the outside with a black core. The red layer must burn away to free the black. They are among the most requested candles in Southern conjure shops.
