Description
Origin & Traditional Use
Star anise is the star-shaped dried fruit of an evergreen tree from China and Vietnam, used as a sweet, liquorice-like spice in Chinese five-spice, Vietnamese pho and mulled drinks. In folk magic the pods are lucky charms and aids to psychic sight.
Uses in the Work
Burn it to open psychic sight and strengthen divination. Place a pod on the altar before scrying or spirit communication, or carry it as a luck charm. The eight points make it a natural star or wheel in spellwork, so set one at the centre of a grid or petition. Add it to incense for Jupiter and Mercury, and use it to consecrate tarot decks and pendulums.
Pairs Well With
Mugwort – 1 oz; Clear Crystal Ball – 80mm; Lucifer Anointing Oil – 2 dram
Lore
Star anise is the fruit of an evergreen tree from southern China and Vietnam. In Japan a related species is planted around Buddhist temples and graves, and its branches are laid on tombs. The eight-pointed seed pod is often linked with the eight-spoked wheel of the year.
