Description
Origin & Traditional Use
Valerian is a tall plant with pinkish flowers whose dried root has a strong, earthy smell. In European folk tradition it was taken as a bedtime herb, and in hoodoo and witchcraft the root is used for protection, love and quieting quarrels.
Uses in the Work
Use it in dreamwork, banishing and love. Place it in a sachet under the pillow for vivid and prophetic dreams, and burn it to quiet a quarrelsome house. It is traditional in curse-breaking and exorcism powders. Its strong smell is said to attract cats and some spirits and repel others, so use it to draw the spirits you want close and to clear those you don’t.

Lore
Valerian was called “all-heal” in medieval herbals. Legend says the Pied Piper of Hamelin carried valerian to lure the rats. Its musky scent drives cats wild, as catnip does, and it was carried as a love charm in the Middle Ages.
