Description
Origin & Traditional Use
Howlite is a white, grey-veined borate mineral from Canada and the USA. It is carved into beads and ornaments and often dyed to imitate turquoise. In crystal practice it is a calming stone used to quiet the mind and temper anger.
Uses in the Work
Use it as a blank, receptive stone in spellwork. It readily takes on colour, intention and charge, so it is often anointed and dedicated to a single working. Place it under the pillow for dream recall, and carry it to temper anger before ritual so that a working is driven by will rather than temper. Its white, veined surface can be written or painted on with a sigil.

Lore
Howlite is named for Henry How, the Canadian chemist who identified it in Nova Scotia in 1868. Because it is porous it takes dye easily, and much “turquoise” on the market is actually dyed howlite. That ability to take on whatever is given to it is the root of its magical use as a stone of receptivity.
